Thirteen years of UMBRiO.

What changed, and what stayed the same in a way we did not expect.

UMBRiO started in 2013 with a manageable question: organisations were collecting mountains of machine data and doing very little with it. Log files were something you dived into once something had already gone wrong. Thirteen years on, everybody collects more data than ever, and that same question still stands.

What changed.

The volume, to begin with. An environment that counted as large in 2013 is an average week now. Cloud, containers and microservices multiplied the number of sources, and with it the number of places where something can break.

Expectations changed too. Where monitoring was a technical matter for a long time, it is now a boardroom subject. NIS2, DORA and the ordinary audit cycle do not ask whether you have it in place, but whether you can show it. Proving it has become a discipline in its own right.

And our own role shifted. We started as specialists flown in to build something. Increasingly, customers then asked: can you also run it? A managed services organisation grew around that, with a seven-layer service model we wrote out along the way. Not as theory, but because we kept seeing that same order in practice.

What stayed the same.

Three things, really.

Data is rarely ready to use. The invisible work of opening up sources, parsing, normalising and setting retention periods is still what determines whether everything above it works. A dashboard is a consequence, not a starting point.

Technology does not solve ownership. An alert without an owner is noise, in 2013 just as much as now. The question "who acts on this, and within how long" matters more than the question of which tool you use.

You speak to someone who knows your environment. We never became a service desk where you have to give your details all over again. That is a deliberate choice, and the reason we stay compact.

Where we stand now.

UMBRiO is part of Proximus NXT: the scale of a large company, with the directness of a small team. Our work now spans everything from platform and data quality through to audit trail, observability and cost insight.

As far as we are concerned, little changes at the core. The question remains: do you have a grip on what is happening, and can you explain it when somebody asks? Everything we do is an answer to those two questions.

Curious where you stand.

Two hours with your team and two of our specialists is enough to make that clear.
